Seasons Greetings from the MPCA

Your neighbours at the MPCA meeting on November 8 discussed:

City Council Change – Welcome to Hilary Gough, new City Councillor for Ward 2. Thank you to out-going Councillor Pat Lorje who skilfully represented the neighbourhoods and people of Ward 2 for the past 10 years.

Remembrance Service in Montgomery Park – Thank you to Montgomery Place residents who gathered at the cairn in Montgomery Park on Friday November 11 for a neighbourhood service of remembrance and respect. Special thanks to the congregation of St. David’s Trinity United Church for opening their doors, and to the community cookie crew. We enjoyed the addition of members of 38 Signal Regiment 4 Squadron this year. The geese stole the show as they flew over the park in V-formations.

Rink in Montgomery Park – Sincere appreciation to Cloverdale Paints and Daryl Nagy of Royal Brush Painting who covered up the graffiti on the rink boards in Montgomery Park. MP residents are grateful for your donation and contribution to our community.

Trains – Saskatoon’s Rail Safety Working Group chaired by former Fire Chief Dan Paulson met with councillors and others on November 14. MPCA President Barb Biddle attended. There are five key rail/street intersections of concern – 11th Street West at Dundonald is one of the five. The Group proposes a study to examine the costs and benefits of relocating rail lines, or building over and under passes. For Montgomery Place, delays on the north-south rail line and hold-ups on the spur line to Viterra give double trouble; community safety is our key issue.

Sound Studies – Steven Bilawchuk of ACI Acoustical Consultants Inc. from Edmonton has been hired to measure sound pollution in Montgomery Place. Full report here.

Indoor Programs – Winter registration is January 11, 2017. See the class line-up here.

New Community Consultant – Elan Ballantyne’s office is on the second floor of the Cosmo Civic Centre, phone 306-975-3380.

Canada Post – Letter carriers who deliver mail in our neighbourhood hope that we’ll be considerate and shovel a safe path from the street to our mailbox this winter. It’s dangerous walking over uneven, icy driveways and sidewalks. Remember – no shovelling – no mail delivery.

City of Saskatoon – Southwest Transportation Study (formerly known as 11th Street Corridor Review) – The City of Saskatoon’s Transportation Division hosted a public meeting about a draft traffic plan for 11th Street and a potential 17th Street extension on November 22.  See our report here.

Montgomery School – Montgomery School welcomed one student from Ukraine and three from Syria recently. Attendance has reached 270 students. The K-4/5 Christmas Concert is December 13 at 2 pm and 7 pm. Christmas break is December 22 – January 3, 2017. No Parking signs along Ortona have increased parking headaches for parents.

Fallen Heroes – Two portraits of Second World War soldiers who died in the war were donated by the Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation to Montgomery School.

St. Dominic School – On December 7 the choir performs downtown at the Knights of Columbus Festival of Carols at 12:20 pm. The K-6 Christmas Concert is December 15 at 6 pm. Christmas Break is December 22 – January 3, 2017.

Next MPCA Meeting – Wednesday, December 14, 7pm in the Montgomery School Library. Note the change from our regular Tuesday time slot.
